The term is a combination between the existing philosophies of Optimism and Nihilism, however it is also closely tied to the previous philosophical traditions of Absurdism and Existentialism.
Starting with the core tenet of Nihilism—that the universe has no inherent meaning, purpose or value, it then applies an optimistic outlook, where if life is devoid of objective meaning, the individual is then free to create their own purpose and values and seek personal fulfillment instead.[1]
Rather than lamenting the absence of inherent meaning in life, Optimistic nihilists celebrate the freedom that comes with it instead, living life on their own terms. Optimistic Nihilism emphasizes living in the present moment and to detach yourself from worries, pains and anxieties, as they don't matter in the grand scheme of things.[2]
