Obesity, to a certain extent, was actually an attractive feature way back when working in factories was the population's main job. Aristrocrats were often quite large in size, and thus, like you said, it was a sign of wealth and sophistication. I'm pleased we've broken out of that idea. "Body positive" (accepting fatties for being fatties - not true body positivity, which is accepting height, deformities, whatever else) hambeasts are trying to bring it back, but thankfully all the influencers who promote that heinous idea are dying out (literally and figuratively - the idea doesn't have as much traction as it did back in the Tumblr days).
