Why would you want to live in such environment? Reproduction (and just life in general) on the surface won't be feasible for a very long time. I don't want to survive that, honestly.
They use the same recurrent archetypes because this has happened before most likely. Plus the transhumanism trope that we observe on ancient books (iron mixed with clay). Maybe that's why the universe keeps reacting in such way, but that would also mean the loop is never properly closed. Is it supposed to happen again, and again and over again? You mean the rebuilding phase or is it something else? Most people will be enslaved if they keep all the technology underground within most tectonic stable regions. Greenland might not be safe after all (the Lockwood's books mention Barron going in the "underworld", possibly referencing that city sized bunker close to the Urals mountain range).

So, in short, we can expect the global grid getting fried sometime around 2029 up to 2036 (before that little spark 'Apophis' triggers all the volcanoes), but I guess something else will happen much sooner than that.
