It's actually both, because of the way jokes work. Moderators and jannies don't get paid and get to have power over what's seen in public, so it's natural that they start trading that power for something else. It doesn't even need to happen by design, one or two moderators start it and then the network matures over time. Closets are perfect because they can function as both carrots and sticks to control powerful people. I can't imagine anyone else who would volunteer to look at illegal images 24/7 to "moderate" them as a job. I honestly believe that this or at least something like this is true and happening right now. There are podcasters and influencers saying this exact thing but with a different wording out there so I'm not the only one who's come to this conclusion. I can't share the specific clips but they're not hard to find. https://elysianfields.se/threads/ban-memes.8390/ 3 to 6 years in prison for memes about politicians, because of course they're not insecure — another joke. It has been superseded by the Public Electronic Decency Online Regulation Bill now, PEDO regulation bill for short. Are you all ready for the PEDO bill?
