Culture Just today I read a H. G. Wells story

The story is called "The Stolen Bacillus" and it'll take you 10 min to read it - not the worst way to spend time.

It's a really short story about potential implications of germ warfare: some people speculate typhus epidemics appearing here and there throughout Europe were artificial, and H. G. Wells is not helping - he's convincingly describing actual germ warfare taking place, by the way of poisoning water supply.

But that's not why I write this. The story features an "underdog" anarchist character that wants to go ER and stage a terror event, he steals bottled cholera and tries to infect the city of London.

This is his psychological portrait that stuck with me:

The world should hear of him at last. All those people who had sneered at him, neglected him, preferred other people to him, found his company undesirable, should consider him at last. Death, death, death! They had always treated him as a man of no importance. All the world had been in a conspiracy to keep him under. He would teach them yet what it is to isolate a man.
