I am extremely sus of any man in their mid-20s to 30s who doesn't play a map-based strategy game. Like, how the fuck do you get through life without occasionally taking the edge off by moving soldiers around on a map?

I just streamed Total War: Rome with a group of friends and feel much better after having a shitty day. That's the only therapy I need.

Might give it a shot. I'm just getting into the Total War franchise. My friend got me into Age of Empires and now he's getting me into Total War.
I'd suggest adding both ETW and NTW into your Steam collection (if you're into 18th century warfare, that is). I've had lots of fun with ETW personally (while using it in conjunction with overhaul mods).

Which ones are they? I'll add them to my wishlist for the winter sale.

For a couple months I only played Warhammer 3 it's a good cope
The AI is the only thing that is lacking in these games preferentially attacking the player
When you up the difficulty it doesn't get smarter only has more economy/army than the player does
This is what keeps the games from being truly great imo because you either have easy campaign or need to cheese battles to win on Legendary
and it doesn't feel like fighting real opponents

There's Total War Attila if you into medieval warfare as well. Haven't tried Total War Troy yet although I reckon it features a smaller map compared to the previous aforementioned titles.

Never been that into Warhammer but I might try it. A few years ago my friend gifted me a bunch of the older Warhammer games so I might reinstall them and try them first.

Same of course, but for now I am hacking and slashing. I feel like once I truly get into the RTS genre, it will make every other game look like child's play in comparison.
I love Dynasty Warriors, if that's what you mean. I play it on my Steam Deck normally.
I also love Diablo if that counts. I love Diablo 4 much more than I did Diablo 3, but Diablo 2 reigns king.

Only map based game I enjoy playing is HOI4 with EAW mod, best way to play HOI4 btw, but sadly most of those map games are quite easy and not that deep. Vicky 2 is great but has big problems. Also distant worlds universe is one of the best modern 4x games, very comfy when your empire is moderatly big and you can just chill looking at a little trader moving between your worlds deliviring goods, or a luxory yacht traveling to a black hole for scenery.

But i no longer play games. As Terry (pbuh) once said:
