Collective Unconscious (Jung) – A level of unconscious shared across humanity, containing universal archetypes and symbolic patterns.Conscious – The level of the mind containing thoughts, feelings, and perceptions of which a person is aware.
Defense Mechanism – An unconscious strategy used by the ego to manage anxiety and internal conflict. Examples include repression, sublimation, projection, displacement.
Displacement – Redirecting an impulse from a threatening object to a safer one.
Dreams – Manifestations of unconscious material, often symbolic; contain manifest content (literal story) and latent content (hidden meaning).
Ego – The rational, conscious mediator of the psyche, operating on the reality principle and managing conflicts between id, superego, and reality.
Eros (Life Drive) – The instinctual drive toward life, creativity, sex, and self-preservation.
Free Association – A psychoanalytic technique in which the patient says whatever comes to mind to reveal unconscious material.
Id – The unconscious reservoir of instinctual drives and energies, operating on the pleasure principle.
Latent Content – The hidden, symbolic meaning of a dream, representing unconscious wishes or conflicts.
Manifest Content – The literal storyline of a dream, as recalled by the dreamer.
Neurosis – Psychological symptoms or patterns of behavior resulting from unresolved internal conflict.
Preconscious – Mental content not currently in awareness but accessible with effort.
Projection – Attributing one’s own unacceptable impulses or feelings onto another person.
Psychic Conflict – Internal tension arising from incompatible demands of id, ego, and superego, or conflicting drives.
Psychoanalysis – A therapeutic system and theory of mind focusing on unconscious processes, internal conflicts, and defense mechanisms.
Repression – The unconscious exclusion of distressing thoughts, impulses, or memories from awareness.
Resistance – The ego’s unconscious blocking of material from surfacing, often seen in therapy.
Sublimation – Transforming raw instinctual energy into socially acceptable or creative outlets.
Superego – The internalized moral and social rules, producing guilt or self-criticism when violated.
Thanatos (Death Drive) – The unconscious drive toward aggression, destruction, or a return to an inorganic state.
Transference – The projection of feelings, desires, or conflicts from significant past relationships onto the therapist.
