(Psychology) who do people insult other people ?

Is there a grand purpose for this or are words meaningless ?

in relative social standing, putting other people down would bring you up in the rankings. Also, if its a common insult shared between a group of people, it might form a pack bond through mutual dislike. Though I do feel like some insults just come out of a place of malice and are largely meaningless.
