“Bread,” the baker tells Elwin. “Same flour. Same yeast. I shut off the fuel, scraped the threads out and left the door open overnight. Came back to a hotter oven and more threads.” Her brother starts backing toward the shop. The baker watches him. “What?” “Nothing went into the oven.” “What did you do to my oven?” He points at the brickwork beside the lower hinge. “Replaced a firebrick.” “With what?” “A firebrick.” “Where did you buy it?” “Off a guy.” The baker takes her glasses off and rubs her eyes. Her brother looks at Elwin. “He sells furnace parts. It wasn't just some bloke holding a brick.” Behind the purple threads, one brick is darker than the others. Its edges have been chipped to make it fit. The baker steps away from the doorway. “There's a crowbar under the bench. You're welcome to ask him more questions first. Apparently I should have.”
