Some time ago, I wrote here about the fragility of identity:
There is no "Whitepill" to be found here. Everything that I wrote about above? Bullshit. If so, it should make you all be more pessimistic because our lives are constanly hanging from a thread stretched over the abyss although I guess this is pretty evident for you all by now. Identity is a fragile construct. Pain is a mechanism that encourages the emergence of mental narratives with the sole purpose of providing an explanation for why something is happening in relation to the past, and as such, it is what gives rise to neurosis purely propagated by thought. Therefore, personal history is an empty construct because it depends on pure interpretations given to memories, where interpretations form the so-called “personal narrative” that revolves around an “I.”

As I see it, when something is painful the mind creates a story so that it can explain what is happening regarding the subject and its surroundings. This is pretty much an automatic thing for the mind, this means that the definition that a person gives to himself in relation to the pain he experiences tends to happen at the unconscious level most of the time. Anything, absolutely anything works for the mind in order to try to explain what is happening and why, and thus we see the appearance of very self-damaging narratives such as "I do not deserve love" and such. The thing is that language has an enormous influence in the unconscious mind, and hence it influences behaviour on a very deep level.

If we part on the premise that we live in a cold and uncaring world, then this means that there is no meaning to anything, but pure interpretations of phenomena. Thus everything finds itself of essence. This is the power that I think we all should know, to better employ this capacity for abstract thinking so that it doesn't fire back at us. It is incredible to think that the mind gives an utmost importance to language when it should be instead, a tool for navigating life. It is all about the story you tell yourself deep down. Depending on the story you tell yourself about you and the world, you will determine how much is the degree of your suffering.

Avoid making of language an ultimate reality, and find peace.
