There is no spirituality to be found in consciousness, for it is only the ego perciving the ego.
It is the ego—the aggregate of biological phenomena and experience in all its forms—that observes and listens. Moreover, it is the ego the one who is aware that it is the one who observes and listens. Everything is perception and, consequently, interpretation. Consciousness is no different from any and all the other ego processes; they arise in the physical brain. As consciousness is only the ego perceiving itself then it cannot be spiritual, for it is only a physical process arising from matter and energy interaction. True spiritualty—if it exists in the first place—simply lies beyond it. Intellectualization of problems concerning human suffering is nothing more than a waste of energy at the biological level just like suffering is. In short, there are things that need to be experienced through the mental process of perception of perception arising from the ego—what we call conciousness—to be understood for what they are. Here's where true pessimism lies: this is hardly accesible for the common human. If what we want to find is something beyond all perception and understanding, then, consciousness and intelligence are no longer sufficient then. Does it even exist in the first place?
