In all my time online I've only ever made one good internet friend, and that relationship was developed over a few years, it wasn't formed overnight.

What have been your own experiences regarding this?

It's kind of fucked that some people don't end up meeting anyone they resonate with in their life and the only other option where one can find anyone who they can remotely relate to is to resort to the internet.

Before the internet and mass transportation, people would stay in one town or city their whole life and if one wasn't so lucky they'd be stuck there having an indifferent opinion of the people around them or at worst, hating everyone's guts.

The internet connects billions of people virtually at high-speeds, and there is a certain level of anonymity that is afforded to everyone, and for this reason it's great for casual socialization but lacking in terms of fostering deeper human connections. Netizens tend to be more guarded and afraid to be vulnerable, because on the internet, everyone's a stranger.

It still seems people are separated by geography and physical limitations as much as ever. The internet only brings fingers to the point of touching, but never meeting.

The internet has been good at connecting niche communities through forums and image boards but corporate social media has been a massive disaster.

The internet for public use was a mistake and should be looked at like any habit.

Technology when used appropriately brings improvement in the human condition. When you use it to abuse others it creates suffering in the human condition. Yes, geography, cities, towns. villages or just certain physical separations keep of us from being able to physically meet, but the internet as it was originally intended was designed as a medium of communication if a nuclear war was to ever, so it would be necessary to keep communication in some form if all other means were to be taken down.

I have a few close friends on the net and if it weren't for this device my life could have never been as tolerable as it is now.

Do you think relationships on the internet can be facile and surface-level due to their physical limitations or nah? Feels like the best relationships are made over many years or if you meet up irl.

In my view, it depends on how much you know of the other person, that being how much you share about each other, even just how comfortable with that person. So it can be surface level and never develop, unless both parties share something about each other and move either closer to opening up or in general emotionally mature.
