With the weapon in hand, you direct your attention to the zombie. His head is sticking through two vertical wooden beams, and as he squeezes his way through the narrow gap, the yellow skin of his face peels back, exposing dark muscle and tendon. One beam splits at the center, and the zombie jerks forward until the wood snaps him to a halt a few inches further. You smell the rot on his flesh and raise the M9 pistol. You fire a shot but hit a beam, cracking the wood further. He lunges through the opening but wedges his body on the shard left by the broken wood. His fingers graze your shirt, but you rotate away and fire again, splitting open a sizable hole in his skull. He slumps against the wooden beams, hands dropping and hanging, and his growls end, leaving the pit in silence. With the zombie dead, you turn your attention to escaping the pit. As you scan the hole, you hear something—a piece of metal clinking along the ground above.
