Optimistic Nihilism Optimistic Nihilism is a contemporary pop-philosophy term which first originated in online discourse and was later popularized by the YouTube channel Kurzgesagt in 2017. Based on the premise that life lacks objective meaning or purpose, It holds that the lack of cosmic significance is not a cause for despair, but a source of liberation and a reason to be happy. Definition The term is a combination between the existing philosophies of Optimism and Nihilism, however it is also closely tied to the previous philosophical traditions of Absurdism and Existentialism. Starting with the core tenet of Nihilism—that the universe has no inherent meaning, purpose or value, it then applies an optimistic outlook, where if life is devoid of objective meaning, the individual is then free to create their own purpose and values and seek their own personal fulfillment.[1] Rather than lamenting the absence of inherent meaning in life, Optimistic nihilists celebrate the freedom that comes with it instead, living life on their own terms. Optimistic Nihilism emphasizes living in the present moment and to detach yourself from worries, pains and anxieties, as they don't matter in the grand scheme of things.[2] Relevancy The dichotomy between the two philosophies of Nihilism and Optimistic Nihilism also draws parallels to the differences between the Blackpill and the Whitepill. The act of taking the Blackpill shares commonalities with existential nihilism, often leading to a bleak and despairing outlook in what appears to be a cold, uncaring and unforgiving world. This may give rise to feelings of depression, anxiety and hopelessness, an effect which is made more apparent in individuals who have suffered greatly from negative experiences in their life. In contrast, the Whitepill acknowledges these realities, but also advocates for the restructuring of oneself, encouraging individuals to accept their situation and move on from being emotionally and psychologically affected by the Blackpill. Similar to Optimistic Nihilism, the Whitepill emphasizes the free agency of an individual to pursue self-fulfillment and create their own meaning in life in a way that's best and most suitable for them.
