We have been subjugated by the "evil" itself for millennia. Call it god, an architect or the source. But the duality of good and evil could essentially be irrelevant constructs created by "humans" or... arbitrary rules imposed by the "source" to, again, subjugate and steer "humans" towards a certain direction. Free will is, after all, a sweet lie wrapped in wax paper. Again, this sounds like a prison to me. Nonetheless, I myself still lean towards the simulation explanation. Not in the sense of a computerized simulation, but something entirely different that escapes our capacity of understanding.
