David Gandy can only be described as a visionary genius with artistic gifts like no other.
It is true that all stories of "success" need to be embellished, but the majority of Gandy accomplishments are verifiable.
He understood line flow and motion at the intuition level, due to his interest in sport cars. He extrapolated principles of design, also theorizing on it. He had grasp of car design terminology like "swage line" or "wheel arches" and understood the idea of "stance". So he also applied to a different field, which shows even greater intellect because he adapted.
Gandy applied the concept of light tunnel to his skin, and its the most interesting of his artistic achievement for me. Bcause skin has a "rough" texture, cars are gloss. Gandy said he observed how lenses and light sets read the body.
Also, gandy has evident understanding of silhouette and negative space. Gandy knows contrapposto, he also has taste for classical art.
Now, I have to presume he formed some of these interests in his modeling career, probably he had a chance to connect with many people who introduced him to these concepts. But majority of his intuitive artform came from observing cars and repairing them.
Almost all his works came out perfect, and what surprised me the most is he isnt all talk and babble, and instead he shows you evidence of his artistic research. Its that evidence that convinces me that all he speaks of is true.
I also see the effects of his training, which surprises me as well, he worked his body in the same way some bodybuilders do. I mean the only comparison I can find is bodybuilding where some people sculpt their body, like arnold for example. Obviously gandy was after another ideal form, he wanted fluidity and movement. The gandy ideal isnt so far from arnold, both did exercises to produce fluid motions.
Lastly, he isnt "complicated" to understand, all ideas are fairly simple.What I dont understand is how he did it all and he was relatively young, it feels now that he already peaked, and theres not much else he can offer.
He was a blast, incredible artist, over 9 years of achievement he changed the entire world. Makes me envious, I dont have any understanding of lighting, I also hate it and consider it a burden. I also detest caring about light and shadow I want to just draw.
