People are selfish for two reasons.
1. They are by nature fallen. That is to say they have an inherited sinful nature. They cannot help but be selfish.
2. They are out of relationship with God or are in the moment acting as though they were. Apart from Christ we can do no good thing. We live in a world that is very far from Christ and seemingly getting further every day, unfortunately even the church is an example of this.
That is why we are taught to store up treasures in heaven rather than here on earth. The next life is where our focus and motivation should be. Not here on this life. And of course being fallen in nature that is exactly where we don't want our focus and motivations to be placed, we want what makes us happy and comfortable here and now.
That is the struggle to live the Christian life.
