Classical music for example can do the same thing -- create a 'liminal' space in your mind -- but it takes you on a journey through the notes in a way the composer intended. I find myself being taken through various kinds of mental imagery when listening to songs like Morning Mood by Edvard Grieg, or Vivaldi's Four Seasons. They don't trap you in a specific place and then trail off into the night as if it's still going on in the background. It goes through a progression with specific markers and then it ends in a specific way. My intuition tells me that the nostalgia angle has been being abused longer than this most recent in-your-face version but I don't have a lot of proof for that. Infantilization of the human race is what they want. Through genetics, intelligence, emotions, their consumptions, everything. EVERYTHING is about dumbing-down and making them humans into perpetual children reliant on the state.

I would understand the point if you tried to approach it "as an art critic" and included jazz (drugging the minds for over 100 years), groovy rock and rock-n-roll, or electronic music. But singling out 2000s pop music? Why?

American recording business has a habit of picking the winning horses and majority of those songs were written by musicians from Sweden (born and raised), Americans try as they can but release subpar product.

Most hit-songs by Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Katty Perry and whatever, all have some hairy guitar-playing dude from Scandinavia participating in one way or another, it's all listed in the credits on Wikipedia page about any particular song, Max Martin and Shellback being the lead characters.

Late 2000s hit-songs are a genuine musical product, then came drugged blacks and not so different caucasian imitators and I don't understand anything about it. The appeal is perhaps mostly stylistic.

There's popular culture and there's elite culture, and sometimes you don't know where to draw the line. Theatre was mostly a low-brow genre in Britain until the late 19th century, whereas it was certainly not so in Continental Europe. Here's a joke: "A German walks into a theatre in London. Was ist DAS?!".
