I've played many visual novels. They are a bit of an exclusive medium because many of them are untranslated or suffer from poor translations.

I started with Clannad (one of the longest ever; Rance is the longest, iirc), then the Infinity Series, the Science Adventure series, most of KID's works, Tsukihime, Higurashi, and nearly all the Denpa I could find. BTW Tsui no Sora remake recently got a fan ENG translation not even a few months ago (I helped a bit; most of the work was done by another translator who had also made translation patches for SciADV). Subahibi was based on the original Tsui no Sora.

Funny enough, I have seen VNs explode in popularity between 2023 and 2024. I have not researched why, but they have become drastically more popular online.

If you are interested in learning Japanese and experiencing some of the greatest modern novels, then you should most definitely read them.

There is one visual novel I could never really get through, Cartagra: Affliction of the Soul. The first time played for like 2 hours then dropped it. The second time played without a guide and got the most mediocre ending. The third time I played with a guide for the normal ending, which unlocks the true ending on next playthrough. But then I lost the save files, and there was no way I'm going through it two more times. But last month I played Everlasting Summer, for which I did all 12 routes and got all CGs, first time doing this for any VN. After going through Everlasting Summer 12 times, now nothing seems impossible and I'm going back to Cartagra, then Kara no Shoujo.

any denpa games with a similar philosophical feel to subahibi? something with a similar schizoism preferably. never played tsui no sora but heard that its themes are mainly nietzschean/kierkegaardean as opposed to the main emphasis on the tractatus in subahibi
Shizuku and Sayonara wo Oshiete on PC98. Neither are translated but use a text extractor+ machine translation and you'll get it. They're not as mega schizophrenic due to being on older systems but the philosophical themes are similar. Sayonara wo Oshiete focuses on the fear of death I think

Maggot Baits and Gore Screaming Show and Fushigi Densha are also good

Why complain about VNs dying? According to VNdb there are ~50k entries, if we give each of them an average playtime of 10 hours that comes out roughly to 60 years of pure content.
