From a certain point in life, I understand that no one is to blame for any harm directed towards me, not even myself because the level of consciousness that those people and I possessed—at the time—was simply not sufficient. By not possessing a sufficient level of consciousness we fall right into the traps of the ego, and I am not saying that acting "in ego" is wrong. In fact, I believe that everything we do is done "in ego". The point is that when there is no consciousness, we cannot detach ourselves from the thoughts and sensations that make us fall into certain patterns of behavior, because the problem lies in believing that we are those thoughts and sensations. It is by falling into those that we harm others and more importantly, ourselves.

When I say that we are more than our thoughts and sensations, I feel that I am talking about consciousness being pure observation, so pure that there is no thought and consequently there are no labels or mental constructs that are attached to whatever we pay attention to. So, it is in pure consciousness that true freedom is experienced, since there we are able to have enough discernment to evaluate whether what our ego thinks and feels, and consequently how it wants to lead us to act, is the one thing that will bring more happiness to others and to ourselves.

It is from a certain point where one acquires a different level of consciousness that one has to take responsibility for the harm that may come from others and prevent harm to oneself. In short, from a certain level of consciousness you will already be the one to blame for allowing yourself and others to harm you.

So, forgive the past and forgive yourself. Look at the present and make sure you act with awareness to prevent harm to others and yourself, seeking the benefit for all.
