So here's the thing nobody tells you. Every website's got a name. Somebody's gotta keep the master list of those names — the big book, every address on the internet. They call it the root zone. And whoever's holding that book? They can wipe a whole country off the internet. Just like that. Gone.
For years that was us. The US government held the book. Then in 2016 Obama handed it over. Gave it to ICANN — private outfit out in California, answers to nobody, no voters, nothing. And who pays their bills? The same companies they're supposed to be riding herd on. Think about that for a second.
There's a room full of governments sitting in on this now. Countries that throw you in a cell for a post. Same table, same chairs as everybody else. Iran was already making noise back in 2016 that ICANN shouldn't have to answer to American law. Argentina and Brazil nodding along. That's where this is headed.
The people who want the internet on a leash got themselves a seat. And we gave up ours.
