As far as I can tell, marijuana can't actually cause schizophrenia (but it can cause schizophrenic-like symptoms) in people without the gene for a psychotic disorder. If you do have the gene, though, then it can.
Only reason I'm even aware of this fact is because my father is a junkie piece of shit who got addicted to marijuana (and other hard drugs that he gave up) and it actually caused his schizophrenia - but only because he had the gene for it.
I was diagnosed as schizoaffective (among other things) when I was 17, despite never having touched a single illicit drug in my life. I guess it's just the luck of the draw when you have the schizo gene.

But honestly what you're saying is probably true. Kids these days (goodness, I sound old) have such fried dopamine receptors that if they smoked what boomers used to smoke, it wouldn't really have much effect. That's my guess, anyway.
