What's the obsession with rank in videogames?

Why bother with ranked? Most of the time it isn't even your fault if you lose since modern games use rigged matchmaking. It's not fair that you get de-ranked and punished for something that is the developers fault for not balancing the teams in a fair way, or that they decided you need to lose since you did good last game by putting someone with ten thousand hours in the game against you, with only 50 hours in the game.

It also forces you to play characters you don't want to play, along with forcing you to try so fucking hard against sweats you forget to ENJOY the video game. I just don't see the appeal to this.

They give everyone a chance to win because that's how you keep the biggest fan base. I haven't played a game where you can make it to the top without skill but only to the middle or something.

Getting better at stuff you do is fun, especially when some form of skill expression is possible and reaching higher ranks will also give you better team mates (in theory). Playing with and against better players will also create better matches as people know what they are doing (again, in theory).

I'm talking about online ranks, not single player games. Although I do agree with you on the part about why ranks in singleplayer games is good.

That's a positive, less women the better. Although for some reason like 99% of mercy players in higher ranks are foids for some reason.
