I'm starting to believe more and more that we're the "Beautiful Ones" like in the Universe 25 rat experiment. And what precedes demographical collapse is a major disaster (poles are about to snap and volcanic activity is surging out of nowhere, and the Sun now has a region with many sunspots similar to the Carrington event). We'll be lucky if this society manages to get through 2030.

Well humans have other advantages like bigger brains and problem solving

Mouse are far less sentient

Plus I think the experimenter was controlling the outcome unconsciously

Humans don't have anyone changing their environment but themselves
