If she was in the middle of nowhere it's possible she never developed the desire or finesse to engage with people on a satisfactory level as she is acclimated to relative solitude.

I agree with that. From what I can gather she did go to university and was part of a few clubs at the time. I honestly find it harder to believe that she's as socially inept as she claims to be. She has friends, she speaks rather openly about having a good relationship with her family, and she's even attending some comicon event overseas if I remember correctly. Though she did mention at some point having BPD, so maybe it's more "voluntary" than she'd like to admit.
