You're on to something but it's nothing good, self discipline (fasting) which is seen by some as "hurting" oneself can be a good thing. Out and out self injury is not. What your talking about is when someone tortures someone else for favor in the dark arts, I wouldn't suggest that. Plenty of interesting books on the dark arts of your really interested out there. I tend to err on the side of respect to my fellow man.
