A Roman seeing a smartphone would think it's straight-up sorcery: a glowing rectangle that summons voices from nowhere, shows moving pictures of distant places, accesses infinite knowledge, or even predicts weather/fortunes. To them, it'd be divine intervention or demonic—miracles or witchcraft—because their understanding of physics, electricity, radio waves, semiconductors, etc., didn't exist.
