My take is that its a false intellectual debate. Its like when the monks gather and summon an egregora. Its an idea that is completely divorced from reality, it came to be due to the repetition on the media, and the magazines that habituated people to the usage of the term.

The term creates the illusion of authority, and the illusion of historical stages. In practice, the term modernity puts a serie of social phenomena under criticism, like industrialization and secularism and capitalism and bureaucracy and the managerial castte and liberalism so on.

They put these things under the same umbrella, and their terminology begins to criticize anything and soon their attitude changes, now anything they dont like is "modernity".

You dismiss the whole concept as media generated illusion... then immediately list its actual contents: industrialization, secularism, capitalism, bureaucracy, the managerial caste, liberalism. Those things existed before anyone slapped the label on them. Factories didn't vanish when the word went out of fashion. Call the bundling sloppy if you want, but calling the whole thing an egregore is backwards. Egregore is the floating thoughtform with no referent outside belief. Modernity is the messy pile of real shit we actually live in.

Do you truly feel happy?
I feel like in the modern world people spend so much time chasing meaning, via religion, family, work, hobbies, etc, and it's often never truly enough.

But in pre industrial times you just lived, and were happy. Meaning was inherited - through the village, the same people around you your whole life, common values, even just the lack of comparison. Now? I'm not sure if many of us will ever die happy. Purpose and meaning have been killed.

Truly happy? In a sense, yeah.

I don't rent.

I have a job that actually engages my brain and doesn't make me want to eat a bullet, most days.

Do I wish shit could be better?

Obviously.

I wish my parents were still alive. I wish I'd had better taste in women instead of whatever chaos algorithm picked for me. But relatively? I'm good. If I started demanding more out of life I'd just come off as a greedy fuck, and I'm not trying to be that guy.

Pre industrial life does sound pretty kino though. You just lived. Meaning wasn't some side quest you had to grind on YouTube and therapy apps, it was baked in through the village, the same faces your whole life, shared values, and zero options to doomscroll what everyone else had. Modern timekeeping and atomization turned us into little disconnected units chasing purpose like it's the last hit of dopamine.

I respect pasolini but mostly because unlike most these scumbags he went around saying "maybe modernity is good", I mean he had the audacity to contradict the mood of the intellectual caste he was part of.
